Next week Gamescom starts again in Cologne. The world’s largest games fair promises more space and comfort. If you still want tickets, you have to hurry.
Gamescom will take place in Cologne from 20 to 24 August. With a new concept and new exhibition halls, the organisers of the world’s largest games fair promise the public a more pleasant stay this year. As in previous years, demand is high: the normal day tickets for Friday and Saturday are already sold out. Tickets for Wednesday and Thursday and evening tickets for admission from 4 p.m. are still available.
New show for a new audience
“Never before have there been so many innovations this year,” explained Felix Falk, Managing Director of the industry association and trade fair organiser Game. A major innovation is the show event “Opening Night Live”, at which Geoff Keighley, a well-known Games Awards presenter, will present some of the most spectacular new announcements and trade fair highlights to a live audience and live stream on Monday evening.
The show is part of a reorientation of the trade fair, which for years has been fully exhausting the capacity limits of Cologne as a trade fair location. The trade fair organisers want to use their own streaming service to be more attractive for those interested in games who are unable to come to Cologne in person. On its own website, the fair collects contributions from exhibitors and also presents its own content such as interviews and award ceremonies.
More space, fewer snakes
In order to offer visitors more space, the organisers have put new halls into operation. In Hall 11.3, for example, a new event arena has been set up in which, in addition to the opening show, e-sport tournaments and special presentations by exhibitors can also be seen. Highlights include the ESL tournament in Counter-Strike on Wednesday and the final of the Premier Tour of League of Legends on Thursday.
To offer more comfort to the spectators, the trade fair planners have widened the aisles, relocated the food stands and changed the distribution of manufacturers to the halls. New is a manufacturer-independent fastlane concept that allows visitors to register online to watch game presentations without hours of waiting. So far, four manufacturers have joined the system. In total, the exhibition area has increased by 8 percent to 218,000 square meters, and the number of exhibitors has risen to 1150.
Focus on Indie Developers
While the big studios tend to present their world novelties at the E3 in Los Angeles, Gamescom increasingly concentrates on indie developers. The smallest providers have considerably more space in the newly designed “Indie Village” to present their games to a new audience and establish business contacts for the distribution of their games.
Politicians have also announced their intention to attend Gamescom. The trade fair will be opened by Federal Transportation and Digital Affairs Minister Andreas Scheuer and State Minister for Digitization Dorothee Bär. The general secretaries of the CDU, the Greens, the FDP, the Left and the SPD will take part in the political panel discussion “Debattle Royal” on Thursday. Axel Voss, a member of the European Parliament from the Union of the Greens and the Free Democrats, will also appear at the Gamescom Congress on Thursday.
One week of games
In addition to Gamescom itself, Cologne will host a series of other events on the subject of computer games. The demoscene party Evoke kicks off with demo developers celebrating their latest creations as early as Friday.
The Devcom developer conference, which focuses on the practical aspects of game development, opens on Sunday before the fair. On Monday, the industry trade fair Spobis Games & Media will focus on the business aspects of e-sports in particular and rights trading.
At the end of the Gamescom Week, the City of Cologne will host the gamescom city festival from 23 August to 25 August 2019 in the city centre of Cologne, which will feature free concerts and a wide range of street food. In contrast to last year, the fair will end on Saturday.
Although at the press conference on Tuesday the organiser game did not explicitly guarantee that the Cologne trade fair location would be able to continue to operate in the years to come, Falk was optimistic that the company would continue to cooperate with the Cologne trade fair in the long term. With the establishment of the new online area, a long-term project has been launched. The Cologne trade fair company also wants to put new exhibition halls into operation from 2021, so that the trade fair could continue to grow.
